here comes the fog

... a post-Easter scheme

He is Risen! We’re celebrating the fruit of Resurrection Sunday with you. While there is so much to celebrate about what GOD did on a weekend like this past one, the weeks following can be filled with all sorts of distractions and discouragements… read on!

4 “Signs” for the Fog

Depending on which part of the world you live in, you may or may not have had a run-in with a snake. In the southwestern US, coming across a rattlesnake is in some way a rite of passage.

Growing up in Arizona and living in the desert, I saw my fair share. Typically, once we had identified them, we would just monitor them for safety until they moved away from the house.

Last summer, I pulled into our driveway and saw my neighbors crowded around theirs. There had been more rattlesnake sightings at the beginning of the summer than was normal.

I went over to find out for myself what the “drama” was.

While pulling into their driveway, they had run over a 5-foot long rattlesnake. Without going into too much detail, the snake was in two pieces, mostly flattened. But it wasn’t dead - yet.

How did we know?

The body was still writhing and the mouth, full of fangs, still furiously biting.

I think this is an appropriate picture post-Easter. Our enemy is again weakened and furious as more darkness turns to light.

There is no undoing what has been done over the weekend, for our enemy. But while the war is lost to him, battles will still be waged. And these battles are often waged against ministry leaders, especially after fruit-filled weekends like the one many of you have experienced.

We often experience this as a kind of fog that settles over us in the coming weeks.

The “fog” is this thick feeling of doubt and discouragement that serves one purpose: to get you to keep your eyes on, well, you.

You know you have descended into the fog when:

  • you are thinking more about what didn’t go perfectly last weekend than all that God did

  • you have the unexplainable feeling of doubt or discouragement, which can feel like a “crash” from the weekend

  • you feel like you aren’t the one for the job or that you aren’t measuring up (for no apparent reason)

  • there is one negative interaction or conversation or instance from the weekend that dominates your mental space

The hope is that all of this will be entirely unrelatable to you. But we wouldn’t be surprised if it resonates. So many of us have experienced this.

So, what do we do if the fog settles? Look at Jesus and cling to what you know.

Here are 4 things to remember:

  1. He has risen, indeed! You’re fighting a war that has been won. So keep moving.

  2. The fog distorts reality. Be skeptical about what you may think/feel in the coming days.

  3. The fog will lift. Remain steadfast. Don’t try to “escape” the fog. That’s how people get lost… or run into a tree, or something…

  4. You exist for the glory of Jesus Christ. We are all the best versions of ourselves when we embrace God’s goals for our lives. Your purpose in existing is to bring glory to Him.

We know so many of you have so much to celebrate from this past weekend. We have had dozens of people within our extended Likewise community praying for all of you. If you have a story to share, we would love to pass it along to our prayer team. You can send it to [email protected].

Aslan on the “Signs”

“Remember, remember, remember the signs. Say them to yourself when you wake in the morning and when you lie down at night, and when you wake in the middle of the night. And whatever strange things may happen to you, let nothing turn your mind from following the signs. And secondly, I give you a warning. Here on the mountain I have spoken to you clearly: I will not often do so down in Narnia. Here on the mountain, the air is clear and your mind is clear; as you drop down into Narnia, the air will thicken. Take great care that it does not confuse your mind.”

— Aslan (C.S. Lewis)
