Faster = Blinder

For most of you… it is crunch time. One more week (for some of you even less) until all of the planning and rehearsals hopefully bear fruit. It’s funny how even after planning something for months, there will still be last minute things we forgot or things to troubleshoot.

What does that mean? It means that this week (like this whole season) is typically very fast paced. What’s at risk? You may be moving so fast that the blessings of the Lord during this time may be imperceptible to you. In the blur of it all, don’t miss the blessings of this season.

For some of you, this Christmas season may be marked by grief. Don’t move so fast that you don’t allow yourself to grieve. Don’t work hard to numb the pain. The Lord is near to the broken-hearted (Ps. 34:18). He meets you wherever you find yourself this Christmas.

Here are 3 ways to slow down enough to notice God this Christmas:

1. Resist the Urgent

This week most things will feel urgent. Resist the urgent in the morning. Sit. Drink your coffee. Ask the Lord for help for the day. Ask Him to help you to be present to all things.

It’s fascinating how choosing to talk about the day ahead with the Lord changes your approach to the day.

If you wake up and immediately start launching into the tasks of the day, that momentum is difficult to stop. The way you start your day sets the pace for your day. If you start the day by giving your attention to Jesus, you’ll find yourself more able to be attentive to Him as the day goes on.

2. Give Undivided Attention to Everyone in Your Home

This is a practical way to anchor yourself. These weeks can often feel like a frenzy. We know one friend who describes himself as a “mad scientist locked in a laboratory” during Christmas Eve week.

By committing to give undivided attention each day to each person in your home, you regain proper context and perspective for your life. Giving yourself the space and time to gain awareness of those close to you will be both a blessing to them and to yourself during this week.

3. Keep a Record

Keep a record this week of all the ways God pulls through for you. Be a “grace hunter.” Look for the blessings. Remember them. God is taking care of us all the time. Always working behind the scenes. It’s seasons like this where we need to make the extra effort to open our eyes to what God is doing.

So, when you notice what He has done for you personally or for someone around you, write it down. Then revisit periodically throughout the week as the heat turns up.

Keller on the Spiritual Truth of Christmas

“Christmas contains many spiritual truths, but it will be hard to grasp the others unless we grasp this one first. That is, that the world is a dark place, and we will never find our way or see reality unless Jesus is our Light.”

- Tim Keller
