you're really good at your job

... and that's why you can't forget this

Whenever you start to get good at something, you say things like, “I can do this in my sleep.” If ministry feels like it is getting easier and easier, you might want to check your pulse…

3 Ways to Avoid Ministry Drift

Some people prefer the term “coasting”… but ministry drift is when you, over time and through systems, processes, and your natural skill set, are able to do your job without thinking too much about it.

Sound great? This is a leading contributor to burnout. Why? Because once you begin to “check out” with your mind, your heart follows soon after.

Here are three things you can do to keep your mind (and your heart) engaged for the long haul:

1. Find Someone to Mentor You

If you feel like ministry drift might be starting to set in, seek out someone who is further down the road than you are. Think of a worship pastor in your area that has a strength that corresponds to a weakness of yours.

Ask questions. Keep learning. One of the best ways to combat ministry drift is to keep finding ways to grow and develop.

2. Find Someone to Pour Into

Another way to avoid drifting is by finding someone to pour into. This could be a strong volunteer, an intern, or another local leader.

Sharing your gifts, experience, and wisdom with others keeps the flame burning. Be a disciple that makes disciples. Make yourself replaceable. More than likely, someone has done this for you and now it’s your turn!

3. Seek the Lord

“Seek the Lord and His strength; seek His presence continually!”

- Psalm 105:4

One of the things we forget to do when we get really good at our roles is to seek the Lord. It’s astonishing how easily self-sufficiency makes its mark on our ministry.

Seeking the Lord and His strength continually and seeking His presence reminds us not only of our dependence upon Him - but also the adventure of ministry He’s called us to.

When we begin to drift, His voice gets tuned out and we might miss an opportunity to follow Him and deepen our faith.

"I feel clear. I feel confident. At the end of the day I know my voice is strong because I now know how to take care of it."
